Shoftim – Torah In Haiku

Shoftim
Laws about warfare …
Include some rules to tell us …
Who should wait to serve —

You’ve bought a new house …
But are waiting to move in? …
You should wait to serve —

Planted a vineyard …
Which has not been harvested? …
You should wait to serve —

You’ve gotten engaged …
But still planning the wedding? …
You should wait to serve —

Life outside of war …
Is more important than war …
That’s Torah’s lesson —
Deuteronomy 20:5-7
Is there anyone who has built a new house but has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his home, lest he die in battle and another dedicate it. Is there anyone who has planted a vineyard but has never harvested it? Let him go back to his home, lest he die in battle and another harvest it. Is there anyone who has paid the bride-price for a wife, a but who has not yet married her? Let him go back to his home, lest he die in battle and another marry her.”
