AVRAM’S FIRST BORN SON …
NAMED BY AN ANGEL OF GOD …
“CALL HIM ISHMAEL” —
Sarai, Avram’s wife, had borne him no children … So [she] took her maid, Hagar the Egyptian … and gave her to her husband Avram as concubine. He cohabited with Hagar and she conceived.
Hagar fled after being treated harshly by Sarai, and encountered an angel.
The angel of God said to [Hagar] … “Behold, you are with child and shall bear a son; You shall call him Ishmael*, for God paid heed to your suffering.
*Ishmael = “God hears”
